Can you freeze freshpet dog food?

A:

Yes, you can.

I freeze my pet foods in small portions. I also add a little water and freeze with a fork. My dogs don't even mind it. They like the frozen food better and it's nice to be able to take out a portion of the food as I go.

Hi, we just received a box of freeze-dried pups! We can't find any directions on how to thaw them. They are supposed to take about 7-10 days to thaw. Do they mean to re-freeze after they thaw? We can't find any more detls about how to use them. We were wondering what we should do. Thank you for your help.

A:

That varies from brand to brand. This chart from the USDA should help:

You can freeze dry dog food for longer storage. It takes about 90 days for it to freeze to -20°C and then the food can be stored for 6 months.

It sounds like you have a freeze-dried batch. If the directions are not on your bag, contact the company.

It really depends on what brand you're using. The freeze dried food usually has no flavor and should be added to their food once thawed. A lot of brands require the food to be cooked first. I recommend looking at a picture of the bag for some additional instructions.

The freeze dried food is only for long term storage. It must be rehydrated to use in the food.

I would suggest to make that batch the next day. Freeze it until ready to use.

I know you sd you got them from a local feed store. But you can ask them. That part is up to them. I think a lot of dog owners buy them to freeze the food.

I have a couple of different brands. I buy it at the local feed store. It's not really a concern to me if it takes a day or a week or a few days to be used.

I guess I can look it up on Amazon and see what the cost is.

Freeze Dry is generally around $2 per pound.

If it's going to take a week or a few days to rehydrate, then I think you will have to decide how long to store the food after rehydrating it.

For example, if the food is going to last a week, rehydrate it on the weekend, refrigerate it, then use it the following week.

If the food is going to last two weeks, then you don't have to rehydrate it.
